Build Usable Space on Any Slope
Grand Junction's terrain doesn't lend itself to flat backyards. Slopes, grade changes, and uneven lots are the norm across the Western Slope, which makes retaining walls one of the most practical landscape investments you can make here.
A well-built retaining wall does two things at once: it holds soil in place and creates level ground where there wasn't any before. That flat space becomes a patio, a planting bed, a driveway edge, or a play area. It also manages runoff, which matters in a climate where summer thunderstorms can move a lot of water across a sloped property in a short time.
Compass designs and builds retaining walls throughout Grand Junction, Fruita, Palisade, and the wider Grand Valley. Whether the job calls for modular block, natural boulders, or large-format gravity systems, we match the solution to your site, your budget, and how you want the space to look and function.

The Secret to Long Lasting Retaining Walls
Drainage Matters More Than the Wall
Most retaining walls don't fail because the material was wrong or the wall wasn't strong enough. They fail because water had nowhere to go.
When water saturates the soil behind a wall, it creates hydrostatic pressure, a lateral force that pushes outward against the structure.
Grand Junction's climate makes this especially relevant. The combination of intense summer storms, alkaline soils, and winter freezes that expand trapped moisture puts retaining walls through more stress than most places.
Every Compass retaining wall includes proper base preparation, gravel backfill to create a free-draining zone behind the wall, and drainage management suited to the specific site.
That's not optional. It's the difference between a wall that lasts decades and one that needs rebuilding in five years.
Versatile Installations For Different Outdoor Spaces
The Different Types of Retaining Walls

Block Retaining Walls
Segmental retaining walls, built from interlocking concrete blocks, are one of the most versatile options available. The blocks interlock for structural integrity and can be curved, tiered, and stepped to suit almost any site condition or design intent.
The result is a crisp, finished look that works well alongside pavers, outdoor kitchens, and water features. Available in a range of sizes and textures, split-face, smooth, tumbled, and a variety of colours to coordinate with your home's exterior. Caps, seating edges, and integrated lighting can all be added to finish the wall properly.
Block walls are also repairable. Individual units can be replaced if needed, which matters in Colorado where freeze-thaw cycles do real work on outdoor structures over time.

Boulder Retaining Walls
For a more naturalistic look, boulders are hard to beat. Large, individually placed stone creates grade changes that feel like they belong in the landscape rather than imposed on it, particularly on the Western Slope where the surrounding terrain is already rocky and rugged.
The weight and irregular profiles of natural stone mean boulder walls can handle significant grade changes without mechanical fasteners or pins.
Planting pockets form naturally between boulders, and the texture softens over time as plants establish around and through the wall. A good boulder wall looks better at ten years than it did on day one.

Redi-Rock & Gravity Walls
Where walls need to handle significant loads or where tie-backs into the slope aren't practical, large-block gravity systems like Redi-Rock are the right tool.
These walls use mass rather than mechanical reinforcement to hold soil, massive interlocking concrete blocks that work through sheer weight.
The faces are sculpted to echo quarried stone, so they carry some of the visual warmth of natural rock at a scale that would be impractical with actual boulders.
An excellent choice for driveway edges, commercial applications, or anywhere a wall needs to perform serious structural work without taking up additional space with tie-back systems.

Freestanding Walls
Not every wall needs to hold back a slope. Freestanding walls define spaces, create privacy, separate zones, frame garden beds, and add visual structure to flat or gently graded areas.
Built without the drainage engineering requirements of a retaining wall, they're a cleaner and often more affordable way to add architectural interest to an outdoor space.
Freestanding walls work well as seating edges alongside patios, as low dividers between outdoor rooms, or as a design complement to a water feature or fire pit installation.

Your Questions on Retaining Walls Answered
Frequently Asked Questions About Retaining Wall Installations in Western Colorado
How tall can a retaining wall be without an engineer?
In most Colorado jurisdictions, walls under 4 feet can be built without a stamped engineering plan. Walls over 4 feet, or walls supporting a structure like a driveway or building, typically require engineering review. We'll flag this during your estimate if it applies to your project.
How long do retaining walls last?
A properly built retaining wall with adequate drainage should last 50 years or more. The walls that fail early almost always have drainage problems. Either it wasn't installed properly or it was installed and then blocked by debris or root intrusion over time.
Do retaining walls add value to a property?
Yes, particularly when they create usable flat space that the property wouldn't otherwise have. A sloped lot with well-designed terracing is meaningfully more functional than one without it, which buyers notice.
What's the difference between a retaining wall and a freestanding wall?
A retaining wall holds back soil. It has earth on one side and open space on the other. A freestanding wall stands independently without soil pressure behind it. The engineering, drainage requirements, and costs are quite different between the two.
Do you need a permit to build a retaining wall in Grand Junction?
It depends on wall height and proximity to property lines or structures. Mesa County and the City of Grand Junction have different thresholds. We check the applicable requirements for your specific site before we start.
Can you build a retaining wall on an existing slope without major excavation?
Sometimes. It depends on the slope angle, soil stability, and what the wall needs to support. We assess the site before recommending an approach. Some slopes need significant grading, others can be worked with minimal disruption.
