Aquascape Certified Ecosystem Pond Installation in Grand Junction, Colorado
Water Features That
Work Like Nature Intended
Most ponds fail because they're built like containers, not ecosystems. At Compass Outdoor Living, we take a different approach: one borrowed from nature itself!
Our ecosystem ponds for Grand Junction homeowners and properties across the Western Slope use a carefully balanced combination of biological filtration, natural rock, aquatic plants, and fish to create a living, self-sustaining water feature. No chemicals.
No constant tinkering. Just a pond that works the way a healthy body of water is supposed to.
Why Ecosystem Is The Way TO go
Why Chose An Ecosystem?
The difference between a pond that stays clear and one that turns green and murky comes down to biology.
In a natural pond, every element pulls its weight: plants absorb excess nutrients, beneficial bacteria break down waste, and fish complete the cycle by providing the organic matter that keeps plants fed.
That's the system we build. Every Compass ecosystem pond is designed from the start to maintain itself, with each component in proportion to the others.
We handle the science so you get the results: a pond that looks like it actually belongs in your environment.
Ponds Designed For a Western Colorado Climate
Replicating Nature
Grand Junction and its surrounding area is high desert. Summers regularly hit the low 90s, humidity averages around 39%, and we see roughly 245 sunny days a year.
That's a tough environment for any landscape feature, especially water. A pond that isn't designed with those conditions in mind will fight you the whole way.
As natives to the area, we understand this, and design for it specifically. Our ecosystem ponds account for evaporation in the summer heat, temperature swings between seasons, and the soil and water chemistry common to the Grand Valley.
The Science Behind The Beauty of Ecosystems
The Unique Elements of an Ecosystem Pond
Rocks & Gravel
These aren't just for aesthetics. Rock and gravel surfaces provide the colonization area that beneficial bacteria need to thrive. The more surface area, the more biological filtration capacity your pond has.
Aquatic Plants
Plants pull nitrates and phosphates directly out of the water, starving algae of its food source. The right plant coverage is one of the biggest factors in keeping a pond clear without chemicals.
Fish
Plants pull nitrates and phosphates directly out of the water, starving algae of its food source. The right plant coverage is one of the biggest factors in keeping a pond clear without chemicals.
Filtration System
A skimmer at the surface collects debris before it sinks and breaks down, and a biological falls filter houses the bacteria doing the heavy lifting on water quality.
Recirculation
Keeps water oxygenated and moving. Critical for fish health, algae prevention, and, honestly, the part that makes the pond worth sitting next to!

Whats The Ecosystem Difference?
Why Ecosystem, Not Just a Pond?
A lot of ponds are sold on aesthetics. Ecosystem ponds are designed around function first, and the aesthetics follow naturally.
A conventional pond relies on chemicals and mechanical filtration to stay clean. When the chemistry is off or the equipment fails, you notice fast. An ecosystem pond distributes that load across multiple living systems: plants, fish, bacteria, and aeration all share the work. It's more resilient, and it's far less work for you over the long run.
The tradeoff is that it has to be built correctly from the start. The ratios of plant coverage, fish load, filtration capacity, and circulation all matter. This is where the installation quality makes or breaks the pond, and why working with a certified contractor isn't just a preference, it's the difference between a feature that runs itself and one that doesn't.
What Happens After Installation
Ecosystem Upkeep & Maintenance
An ecosystem pond is not zero maintenance, but it's a lot less than people expect.
Typically, you're looking at a spring cleanout once a year, occasional top-offs during peak summer evaporation, and basic fish feeding if you choose to stock the pond
We offer ongoing cleaning and maintenance plans tailored to your pond's size and setup so you don't have to think about it.
We also handle
repairs
and
renovations of existing water features, households throughout the Grand Valley.

About Compass
We
Know
Water Features
Compass is a certified Aquascape contractor: vetted and trained by the same organization that sets the standard for ecosystem pond installation across North America. Aquascape's certification program requires demonstrated quality of work, ongoing education, and a track record of customer satisfaction. It's not self-awarded, and not every contractor has it.
For Grand Junction homeowners, that credential matters because the Western Slope's climate puts demands on a water feature that generic installation guidance doesn't account for. We know this environment. We build for it.

Your Questions on Ecosystem Ponds Answered
Frequently Asked Questions About Ecosystem Pond Installations in Western Colorado
Do I need a permit to build a pond in Grand Junction?
For most small residential backyard ponds filled with municipal water, a building permit typically isn't required.
However, Colorado has specific water law considerations worth knowing about if a pond intercepts groundwater, a well permit from the Colorado Division of Water Resources may be required. Ponds near drainage easements or above a certain size can also trigger additional review. We're familiar with local requirements and will flag anything that applies to your project before we start.
How much maintenance does an ecosystem pond actually need?
Less than most people expect. A well-built ecosystem pond typically needs one professional spring cleanout per year, occasional top-offs during summer to account for evaporation in our dry climate, and basic fish feeding if stocked.
HomeGuide puts annual maintenance costs for a well-maintained residential ecosystem pond at around $1,000–$2,000, which includes professional visits. Day-to-day, the biology handles itself. Compass offers maintenance plans if you'd rather hand that off entirely.
Will my pond freeze in winter?
Grand Junction winters can push well below freezing, but a properly built ecosystem pond handles this. Koi and goldfish are hardy.
They enter a natural dormant state near the bottom of the pond as temperatures drop, and can survive as long as the pond doesn't freeze solid and oxygen exchange is maintained.
That means at least 3–5 feet of depth and an aerator or de-icer keeping a small opening in the ice. We design with Colorado winters in mind and offer seasonal winterization to make sure your system comes through spring in good shape.
Can I add fish to my pond?
Yes, and we'd encourage it. Koi and goldfish are a natural part of a balanced ecosystem pond.
They graze on algae, contribute nutrients for your plants, and make the pond genuinely interesting to spend time near. We advise on species selection and stocking levels that match your pond's size and filtration capacity so the biology stays balanced.
What's the difference between an ecosystem pond and a regular pond?
A conventional pond relies on chemicals and mechanical filtration to stay clean. An ecosystem pond distributes that work across living systems; plants, fish, bacteria, and aeration all carry the load together. It's more resilient, requires less hands-on intervention, and tends to stay clearer over time because it isn't dependent on getting the chemistry exactly right every week.
Can you renovate an existing pond that isn't working?
es. As a certified Aquascape contractor, Compass renovates existing water features regularly: converting chemically dependent ponds to ecosystem builds, fixing leaks, updating aging equipment, or rebuilding something that was never installed correctly. See our renovation page →
