Fountainscape Installation in Grand Junction, Colorado
Versatile Water Features
For Any Space
Small Footprint, Big Impact
What Are Fountainscapes?
Not every yard needs a pond. Not every patio has room for a waterfall. But almost any outdoor space, a small courtyard, a front entry, a corner of a deck, can support a fountainscape, and the benefit it provides makes is out of proportion to its footprint!
A fountainscape is a self-contained, recirculating water feature built around a single focal element: a column of real basalt stone, a spillway bowl, or a stacked slate wall.
Water bubbles or cascades over the surface and disappears into a hidden underground basin, where a pump pushes it back up again.
No pond, no stream, no ongoing water chemistry to manage. Just sound, movement, and something you won't be able to resist stopping to watch.
If you want water in your outdoor space but not the commitment of a full feature, this is where to start.
Style That Matches You
The Different Types of Fountainscapes

Basalt Columns
Real Mongolian basalt stone, (not faux, not composite) core-drilled through the center so water travels up from the hidden basin below and bubbles out from the top before cascading down the natural faceted surface. Each column is unique; the volcanic basalt has natural variation in colour, texture, and patterning that no manufactured material can replicate.
Columns are typically installed in groups of two or three at different heights, which creates visual rhythm and a more complex water sound. The effect is elemental — it reads like a natural spring, not a garden feature.
Aquascape sources their basalt columns from Mongolia, where the stone is hand-selected and core-drilled before shipping. Sets typically include columns at 24", 30", and 36" heights.

Stacked Slate
Lightweight, durable fiber-resin composite built to look and age like real stacked slate stone. Available in three forms: sphere, urn, and spillway wall, which means you can match the style of your outdoor space rather than defaulting to one look.
The sphere is a bold, contemporary choice. The urn reads more classical and works well alongside planted containers or garden beds. The spillway wall delivers a wider, sheeting water effect — water emerges from three separate outlets across the top of the 32" wall and spills over the textured face into the basin below. It's the most architectural of the three and suits modern outdoor rooms and patio settings particularly well.
All three can be combined in a single installation for a custom arrangement, and the spillway wall has riser options to extend the height if you want more drop.

Spillway Bowls
Tiered spillway bowls stack at different elevations, with water overflowing from one into the next before disappearing into the basin at the base.
The multi-step cascade creates a softer, more complex sound than a single-source feature — water has more surface to travel over, so the result is less of a single note and more of a layered sound.
Spillway bowls suit patios and entertaining spaces particularly well. They're visually elegant without being fussy, and the wide, open bowl shape makes a strong focal point from a seated position.
They pair well with outdoor lighting, which turns the water reflection into something genuinely worth looking at after dark.
Perfect For Our Climate
Why a Fountainscape Makes Sense
A high desert climate isn't naturally lush. The landscape around the Grand Valley is dramatic, but it can feel dry and stark closer to home. Especially in summer when temperatures push into the 90s and the yard bakes.
A fountainscape addresses that without asking much from you. The sound of moving water is cooling in a psychological sense even when it can't drop the temperature directly. Research published in PNAS found that water sounds produced the largest positive effect on health and mood outcomes of any natural sound category studied. It also gives birds and pollinators a reliable water source in a climate where those can be scarce, which adds life and movement to a yard that might otherwise feel static.
And practically: these are systems built for outdoor climates year-round. The hidden basin, pump, and plumbing are designed to be winterised properly, so the feature survives Colorado's freeze-thaw cycles without cracking or failing.

About Compass
We
Know
Water Features
Compass is a certified Aquascape contractor: vetted and trained by the same organization that sets the standard for ecosystem pond installation across North America. Aquascape's certification program requires demonstrated quality of work, ongoing education, and a track record of customer satisfaction. It's not self-awarded, and not every contractor has it.
For Grand Junction homeowners, that credential matters because the Western Slope's climate puts demands on a water feature that generic installation guidance doesn't account for. We know this environment. We build for it.

Your Questions on Fountainscapes Answered
Frequently Asked Questions About Fountainscape Installations in Western Colorado
How long does Fountainscape installation take?
Most fountainscape installs are completed in half a day to a full day, depending on the number of elements and whether any electrical work is needed. It's the fastest of Compass's water feature installations by a significant margin.
Do Fountainscapes need a water line?
No. The system is self-contained and fills from a garden hose at installation.
Do Fountainscapes need electricity?
Yes. The pump runs on a standard GFCI-protected outdoor outlet. We can trench a line to the feature location if there isn't one nearby. Running costs are low. Most residential fountainscape pumps typically cost less than $20/month to run.
Can I run my Fountainscape year-round?
n Grand Junction's climate you can run it well into autumn. For winter, the pump gets removed and stored, and the lines get drained; a straightforward process that takes about 30 minutes. In mild winters some homeowners leave smaller features running with a de-icer, but shutting down properly is the lower-risk approach.
Can lighting be added to a Fountainscape?
Yes, and it makes a real difference, particularly with basalt columns and spillway bowls, which look striking with underwater accent lighting after dark. LED lighting can be included at installation or added later.
What if I want something bigger eventually?
Tell us upfront and we can plan for it. A fountainscape can be installed in a way that allows a pondless waterfall or even an ecosystem pond to be added later without tearing out the original work.
