Outdoor Design Services in Grand Junction, Colorado
Conceptualizing Your Dream
Outdoor Space
Design is where your entire project either comes together or falls apart.
Most issues people run into with outdoor projects; poor drainage, awkward layouts, things not lining up, spaces that don’t get used etc. can usually be traced back to a rushed or incomplete plan. That’s why we treat design as a critical step, not an add-on.
At Compass Outdoor Living, every design starts with how your property actually behaves. In Grand Junction and across the Western Slope, that means factoring in sun exposure, slope, soil movement, and water flow from the start. What works in other parts of the country doesn’t always hold up here, so the plan has to be built around local conditions.
Why opting For a Design Service Pays Off
Seeing the Project Before It’s Built
We use design software that allows you to see a realistic version of your space before construction begins. Instead of trying to interpret a flat sketch, you can understand spacing, scale, and how everything connects. You can stand in the layout, so to speak, and get a feel for how it will actually function.
That’s where most of the important decisions happen. Adjustments are easy at this stage. Once construction starts, they’re not.

Bespoke Designs For Our Dry Climate
Built Around Western Colorado Conditions
Designing outdoor spaces in this area comes with a specific set of challenges.
Grand Junction gets intense sun, wide temperature swings, and soil conditions that can shift over time. Water management is also a constant factor, whether that’s irrigation efficiency or making sure runoff is handled correctly.
Ignoring those things leads to problems that show up months or years later.
We account for things like how materials respond to heat and freeze cycles, where water needs to move during storms, how to reduce maintenance in a dry climate and how to position shade and usable space throughout the day.
If the design doesn’t hold up to the environment here, it’s not a good design.

Build Ready Takeoff
From Design to Build Without Gaps
A common issue in this industry is the disconnect between design and construction.
Plans look good, but when it’s time to build, details are missing or unclear. That’s when projects slow down, costs increase, and compromises get made.
Our designs are created with construction in mind from the start. Measurements, elevations, and layout decisions are all resolved before the build begins, so there’s no guesswork in the field.
If we’re handling the installation, everything carries through exactly as planned. If you take the design elsewhere, you still have a clear roadmap to follow.
A More Cohesive Design
Everything Covered From Start to Finish
Every project is different, but most designs bring together multiple elements into a single cohesive plan. That might include patios, retaining walls, outdoor kitchens, fire features, lighting, or water elements.
The important part is that they’re not designed separately. They’re planned as one system so everything fits, flows, and functions the way it should.
If you’re still in the early planning stage, online resources can be helpful for gathering ideas, but translating those ideas into something that works on your property is where the design process comes in.

Your Questions on Outdoor Design Services Answered
Frequently Asked Questions About Outdoor Design Services in Western Colorado
Do I need a design for a smaller project?
In many cases, yes. Even smaller patios or yard updates can run into issues if layout and drainage aren’t thought through first. A basic design can prevent problems later.
Can the design be adjusted?
Yes. That’s part of the process. It’s much easier to make changes before construction starts, so we refine things until it feels right.
Do you only design, or do you build as well?
We do both. Some clients use us for design only, but most move forward with us for construction since the plans are already aligned with how we build.
Can you design around irrigation and water restrictions?
Absolutely. Water use is a big factor on the Western Slope.
We design with efficiency in mind, whether that means drip systems, zoning, or incorporating low-water landscaping where it makes sense
Do I need a design if I already know what I want?
Most people have a good idea of what they want, but the layout and technical side still need to be worked out.
A design takes your ideas and makes sure everything fits the space properly, drains correctly, and can actually be built without running into problems.
