Paver Installation in Grand Junction, Colorado

The Essential Finishing Touch
To Any Outdoor Space

Unlike poured concrete, which can crack and shift, pavers are installed as a system.

That flexibility is what makes them better suited for the soil conditions and temperature swings you get in Grand Junction and across the Western Slope.

At Compass Outdoor Living, we design and install paver systems that are built to last, not just look good on day one.

Built For Entertaining

Entertaining Space Pavers

Pavers are the foundation of most outdoor living spaces.

Whether it’s a patio, fire pit area, or outdoor kitchen, everything sits on top of that surface. If the base isn’t done correctly or the layout isn’t thought through, the entire space ends up feeling off.

We design entertaining areas so they feel natural to use. That means planning for seating, movement, and how people gather.

Pavers also give you more control over the look. With different patterns, colors, and layouts, you can create something that fits your home instead of something that looks like a standard concrete slab.

Functional As Well as Beautiful

Benefits of Paver Entertaining Spaces

Natural gathering layout

Pavers help define seating and social areas so people naturally come together instead of spreading out awkwardly.

Flexible design option

Patterns, borders, and color choices let you create a space that fits your home instead of a standard slab look.

Comfort underfoot

Pavers stay more comfortable to walk on compared to large concrete surfaces, especially in direct sun.

Easy integration

Works seamlessly with fire pits, outdoor kitchens, and seating areas without awkward transitions.

Better drainage

Joint spacing allows water to move through instead of pooling where people are sitting or standing.

Holds up to heavy use

Built to handle foot traffic, furniture, and regular use without cracking or breaking down.

Striking First Impressions

Driveway & Walkway Pavers

Walkways and driveways are the first thing you and your guests see. As a result shape how your property feels from the moment you arrive.

Plain concrete works, but it tends to look flat and wear down over time. Pavers offer a more durable and flexible option that can handle movement and still maintain a clean, consistent appearance.

We design walkways to guide movement naturally, whether that’s leading from the driveway to the front door or connecting different areas of your yard. Spacing, alignment, and transitions all matter here.

For driveways, the focus is on both strength and appearance. Proper base preparation is critical so the surface holds up under weight without shifting or settling.

Improved curb appeal

Adds texture and detail that elevates the look of your home from the street.

Slip-resistant surface

Provides better traction than smooth concrete, especially in wet or icy conditions.

Easier repairs

Individual pavers can be replaced without removing the entire surface.

Clean edge transitions

Creates a more finished look where walkways meet lawns, driveways, or patios.

Striking First Impressions

Paver Patios

A paver patio is what turns a backyard into usable space.

It creates a defined area for seating, dining, and gathering, and it acts as the base for features like fire pits, kitchens, and lighting. Without that foundation, everything else feels disconnected.

Pavers are especially well-suited for patios in Grand Junction because they handle freeze/thaw cycles better than poured surfaces. If movement does happen, individual pavers can be adjusted instead of replacing the entire area.

They also require very little maintenance when installed correctly, which is why they’re often the preferred choice for long-term outdoor projects.

Defined outdoor living space

Creates a clear area for seating, dining, and gathering that feels separate from the rest of the yard.

Adapts to ground movement

Flexible system reduces cracking compared to solid concrete slabs.

Low maintenance surface

Requires minimal upkeep while maintaining appearance over time.

Custom layouts and patterns

Allows for tailored designs that match your home and landscape style.

Works with multi-level designs

Easier to build around elevation changes, steps, and retaining walls.

Long-lasting performance

When installed correctly, paver patios hold up for years without major issues.

About Compass

We Know Outdoors

Compass is a CHMA Certified Paver Installer, meaning our work meets the standards set by the Concrete Masonry & Hardscapes Association for proper paver installation across North America.

This certification requires hands-on training, demonstrated installation knowledge, and an understanding of best practices for base preparation, drainage, and long-term performance. It’s not something contractors can self-claim, and not every installer qualifies.

For homeowners in Grand Junction, that matters. The Western Slope’s soil conditions, temperature swings, and freeze/thaw cycles put real stress on outdoor surfaces. A paver system that isn’t installed correctly can shift, settle, or fail over time. We build with those conditions in mind, using methods that are designed to hold up here, not just look good when the job is finished.

Your Questions on Pavers Answered

Frequently Asked Questions About Pavers in Western Colorado

  • Are pavers better than concrete in Grand Junction?

In most cases, yes. Particularly in our area.

Grand Junction sees temperature swings, freeze/thaw cycles, and soil movement that can cause poured concrete to crack over time. Once a concrete slab cracks, repairs are usually visible or require full replacement.

Pavers are installed as a flexible system. They can shift slightly with ground movement without cracking, and if an issue does occur, individual sections can be adjusted instead of replacing the entire surface. That makes them a more durable and practical option long-term for Western Colorado conditions.

  • How long do paver patios and driveways last?

When installed correctly, paver systems can last for decades.

The lifespan comes down to what’s underneath. Proper excavation, base preparation, and compaction are what prevent settling and movement over time. The surface pavers themselves are very durable, but the foundation is what determines how well everything holds up.

With the right install, it’s not unusual for paver projects to last 20–30+ years with minimal issues.

  • Do weeds grow between pavers?

They can, but it’s usually minimal if the installation is done properly.

We use joint sand and compaction methods that help lock the pavers together and reduce gaps where weeds can take hold. Most weed growth that does appear tends to come from debris sitting on the surface rather than growing up from underneath.

Occasional maintenance like blowing off debris or refreshing joint sand over time is typically all that’s needed to keep things clean.

  • Are pavers high maintenance?

Not compared to most outdoor surfaces.

Pavers don’t require sealing to function, and routine upkeep is usually limited to basic cleaning and occasional joint sand maintenance. If you choose to seal them, it can enhance color and make cleaning easier, but it’s optional.

The main advantage is that you’re not dealing with large cracks or surface failures that require major repairs.

  • Can pavers handle vehicle weight for driveways?

Yes, when they’re installed with the correct base.

Driveways require a deeper, more compacted base than patios or walkways to properly support vehicle loads. When that base is built correctly, pavers can handle regular vehicle traffic without shifting or sinking.

The pattern used also matters. Certain laying patterns, like herringbone, are designed to better distribute weight and improve long-term performance for driveways.

  • Will pavers fade in the sun?

Some natural color softening can happen over time, especially with constant sun exposure in areas like Grand Junction.

That said, high-quality pavers are designed to retain their color well, and any change tends to be gradual and even rather than patchy. If maintaining color is a priority, sealing can help preserve the original appearance.

  • Can pavers be installed over existing concrete?

    Sometimes, but not always.

If the existing concrete is stable and in good condition, it may be possible to install pavers over it. However, if the slab is cracked, uneven, or has drainage issues, it’s usually better to remove it and start with a proper base.

We evaluate this on a case-by-case basis to avoid building over a foundation that could cause problems later.

  • Do pavers get slippery?

    Generally, no.

Most pavers have a textured surface that provides better traction than smooth concrete, even when wet. This makes them a good option for walkways, patios, and areas around water features.

In winter conditions, they also tend to perform better than slick surfaces.

  • Can I expand my paver patio later?

Yes, and this is one of the advantages of pavers.

Because they’re modular, additional sections can be added later without needing to redo the entire space. We can design the layout upfront so future expansions tie in cleanly and don’t look like an afterthought.
